WHYY Internships

Internships are an important element in the growth of young professionals, and WHYY offers a variety of meaningful learning opportunities and on-the-job training experiences for junior- and senior-year undergraduates and graduate and postgraduate students (within two years of graduation). Experiences range from production and newsroom opportunities across all media platforms of the region's primary public media provider to branding, promotions and public relations and other administrative departments.


WHYY internships provide valuable and practical hands-on experience, supervised by award-winning professionals. Interns maintain a working portfolio of their projects, demonstrating progress throughout the semester, and will receive an end-of-term review and career guidance. College credit may be granted. Internships are unpaid.


Students will be selected through a competitive application and interview process for internships during three term periods: fall (September to December), winter-spring (January to May) and summer (June to August).

The following materials must be completed, placed in one package and mailed via USPS, UPS or FedEx:

  • Cover letter discussing career goals, three internships in order of preference, computer and language skills and any specific, relevant broadcasting or media experience
  • A two-three page writing sample or tear-sheets if published
  • A DVD-R sample, if appropriate of any media or web based work
  • A letter of recommendation from an individual who can speak to your relevant work experience, background, skills or work ethic. The letter must be received in a sealed envelope with the recommender's signature across the flap.
  • Applicants from non-native English-speaking countries must provide proof of competence in speaking and writing in English through TOEFL minimum scores of 600 (PBT), 200 (CBT) or 100 (IBT).

Note: International applicants must have a valid visa. WHYY does not assist with visa applications.

Communications and Brand Management

Interns assist the communications department in all aspects of promoting WHYY, on air, online, in print and through special events. Candidates must have excellent organizational skills, the ability to meet deadlines and good verbal and written communication skills. Experience working for a school newspaper or magazine is helpful, as is experience promoting campus events.


Community Relations

Students majoring in business, hospitality, marketing, or communications can gain experience in all aspects of event-planning and promotion. Interns assist in the creation and execution of events and assisting the Community Relations team in various administrative tasks. Candidates must have excellent verbal, written and organizational skills, the ability to take initiative and problem-solve, and be able to work some weekends.


Desktop and Network Support (MIS/IT Support)

As a key member of the MIS/IT department, this position is responsible for assisting the MIS/IT Department with all aspects of desktop systems, network systems, and other hardware/software related systems. Candidate should be working toward a Computer Science or Management Information Systems degree, and possess knowledge of both Windows and MAC platforms, MS Office products including Outlook, Cisco routers and switches, and a working knowledge of current communications devices and protocols, server and desktop technologies. Candidate should also posses the ability to help support a 250+ node network, provide some training to staff, and assist with the management of multiple projects.


Educational Programs and Services

Educational Programs and Services encompass television and radio programming, community outreach, educational print materials, online services and special events. Interns have the opportunity to help create various platforms of media content, assist at various membership events, support educator and parent membership initiatives and guide students and members in the use of the Dorrance H. Hamilton Public Media Commons at WHYY.


Finance & Accounting

Internships are available for students majoring in accounting or finance who have a good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel. Duties include updating financial schedules, preparing journal entries, reconciling bank statements, analyzing general ledger account balances and assisting other department members on special projects.


Fundraising/Major Gifts

Interns experience all aspects of working with high-level donors in the Major Gifts Department. Interns work with staff to help administer appeals, manage data entry, conduct prospect research and assist at special events. Applicants must be computer proficient and have knowledge of Microsoft Office, Excel and Access.


Graphic Design - Motion Graphics

WHYY's Graphic Design Department has a very unique opportunity for someone interested in a future in Broadcast Design and Animation: intern will be a lead animator for a WHYY-TV Production, in addition to being given the opportunity to work on other in-house animation projects. Candidate must be competent in the use of AfterEffects CS4 and PhotoShop CS4, be a dependable self-starter, be able to work independently, as well as be open to constructive analysis. Intern will need to be able to commit to at least 20-24 hours/week, and be willing to complete a test in AfterEffects CS4 as part of the interview process. Must submit a media sample with application.


Graphic Design - Print

Interns assist in the everyday operations of an in-house design department. Interns work with WHYY's graphic and multimedia designer, developing print products such as event invitations, signage, newspaper ads, Web graphics, marketing and event collateral and fulfill other day-to-day tasks. Candidates must be multitaskers, able to work well in a fast-paced team environment and on a project from concept to completion. Proficiency with Macintosh computers, InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator are required. Print production and Web graphic knowledge are preferred. Candidates must submit at least four samples of their work and a résume.


Human Resources

Students majoring in Human Resources, Psychology or Management, and who are in their junior year or later, have the opportunity to obtain hands-on experience in human resources which will prepare them for jobs they will obtain out of college. Responsibilities include assisting staff with their administrative, recruitment, regulatory compliance, and benefits needs.


Member & Audience Services

Students majoring in business administration can help detail the Member & Audience Services Department's set of processes and procedures. Candidates should have knowledge of process-mapping, strong writing and interpersonal skills and experience using Microsoft Word and Excel to create an accurate and detailed depiction of department procedures. Interns have the opportunity to make suggestions for improvement in current and future processes.


On Canvas

On Canvas is a 30-min weekly music television show that introduces audiences to the ever mixing genres and styles of music that define the arts community of Philadelphia and the Delaware Valley region. The show is comprised of on-stage performance and backstage interviews with the featured artist. Previously featured artists include Andrew Bird, Melody Gardot, Rufus Wainwright, Ra Ra Riot, Terence Blanchard, and Janis Ian. We are looking for an individual who has experience using and creating interactive social media. This person should possess strong writing skills and previous experience working with and creating a presence on social networking outlets. This person should also have a passion and knowledge of music, music websites, and music venues in and around Philadelphia.


Public Information

Interns assist senior publicists with writing press releases and stories for internal and external newsletters, updating news media contact databases and organizing press clips. They also assist with special events and promotional activities. Strong writing, editing and organizational skills are required.


Radio Times

Radio Times is a live, two-hour daily news and information call-in show produced by WHYY. Interns assist with basic radio production duties and generate research on show topics. Show topics include local and national news and politics, foreign affairs, the economy, health and science, and arts and culture.


Voices in the Family

Students interested in mental health, psychology and/or communications can gain experience working for WHYY-FM's psychology call-in program. Responsibilities include researching background material, contacting potential guests and callers for the program and general production and administrative duties.


WHYY-FM News - NewsWorks

NewsWorks interns will assist primarily in the community news coverage in N.W. Philadelphia, while also pursuing other stories as needed.  Interns should have some familiarity with news reporting, as well as with gathering field audio and editing audio (e.g. ProTools).  Interns should also have the flexibility to do some night work (e.g. covering a community meeting).Click here for more information about NewsWorks


 

WHYY-FM News – NewsWorks Web Content

Web - Intern would work under the direction of Don Henry, senior Web producer, to post content to the Web site, as well as to develop content (graphics, maps, package displays).  Some familiarly with HTML, CSS, WordPress, Flash highly recommended.  Familiarity with Javascript, PHP and Perl a plus.


WHYY Health and Science News Interactive

Students will work closely with WHYY's Health+Science web producer and reporters as they produce original web-based photo, video, audio, and interactive resources for WHYY's Health+Science news page, and will assist in the online promotion of the site through social media. A good candidate will be resourceful, will have a strong interest in health and science topics and will possess excellent organization, communication, and computer skills (Mac/PC). Internet literacy, including a working knowledge of basic web production, XHTML, FTP, web graphics, multimedia production, Wordpress, blogging and social media, a plus.


Dorrance H. Hamilton Public Media Commons

Part time: 6-10 hours/week
The After-School Instructing Assistant internship offers the opportunity to assist with the production of a multi-media learning experience for Philadelphia high school students. Assist WHYY Dorrance H. Hamilton Public Media Commons staff with project coordination and instruction by serving as second instructor in a classroom of 10-15 high school students who are learning video production; keep records and provide case management for all enrolled students; assist in some lesson planning and implementation. Candidate must have completed coursework in journalism, education, social work, production, or related field; have experience working with video and/or with teens; and have excellent organization and communication skills. Local travel is required; afternoon and weekend availability needed.


WHYY-TV News (Wilmington, DE)

Interns assist in the daily operations of the Wilmington News Room, which includes contributions to the WHYY's website, WHYY-FM, and also WHYY's TV news magazine First The position will entail research, writing, and scheduling interviews, so excellent writing, computer, and communication skills are required. Interns may also be given the opportunity to get out in the field with reporters, greet guests, run the teleprompter, and take notes on broadcasts, so some training in journalism is also essential. Self-starters and students motivated to learn this business will succeed. Must have transportation to commute to Wilmington, Delaware.


Wider Horizons

Wider Horizons addresses the needs and interests of baby boomers and others 50-plus through multimedia content and civic-engagement events. Wider Horizons is a partner in Coming of Age, the Philadelphia-based national initiative to inspire fulfilling life transitions through engagement, lifelong learning and community leadership. Interns develop resources for the Web and print and research and compile information on community resources, events and WHYY programming. Good writing skills, attention to detail and ability to conduct Internet research are required.
