WHYY Internships

Internships are an important element in the growth of young professionals, and WHYY offers a variety of meaningful learning opportunities and on-the-job training experiences for college juniors and seniors and graduate and postgraduate students (within two years of graduation).

Internship experiences range from production and newsroom opportunities across all media platforms of the region's primary public media provider to branding, promotions and public relations and other administrative departments.

WHYY internships provide valuable and practical hands-on experience, supervised by award-winning professionals. College credit may be granted. Internships are unpaid.

Students will be selected through a competitive application and interview process for internships during four term periods: fall (September through November), winter-spring (January through April), summer I (May through August) and summer II (June through September).

How to Apply

WHYY offers unpaid internships to junior- and senior-year undergraduates, graduate and postgraduate students throughout the year. The following materials must be completed and sent as attachments in one email to: internships@whyy.org

  • Cover letter discussing career goals, three internships in order of preference, computer and language skills and any specific, relevant broadcasting or media experience
  • A two- or three-page writing sample
  • A DVD-R sample, if appropriate, of any media or Web-based work
  • A letter of recommendation from an individual who can speak to your relevant experience, background, skills and/or work ethic. If the individual writing your letter of recommendation would prefer to send it under separate email, please email internships@whyy.org inform us of this and include the name of the person writing your letter of recommendation and when it will be sent in that email. Your application packet will not be considered complete and will not be forwarded to the appropriate staff members until the letter is received.
  • Applicants from non-native English-speaking countries must provide proof of competence in speaking and writing in English through TOEFL minimum scores of 600 (PBT), 200 (CBT) or 100 (IBT).

Note: International applicants must have a valid visa. WHYY does not assist with visa applications.

If requested, WHYY will ask interns to complete the application forms for a CBC and CAC prior to their first day and cover the cost of each application form.

Note: A conviction record will not automatically result in your disqualification of interning; felony and misdemeanor convictions will be considered only to the extent they relate to the intern position for which you are being considered. However, failure to disclose a conviction and/or mischaracterization of a conviction will result in your ineligibility for interning and/or termination for interning (even if the conviction would not have barred your eligibility for interning had it been properly disclosed).

Application Deadlines

Students will be selected through a competitive application and interview process for internships during four term periods. For consideration, applications must be postmarked by the dates shown below:

Fall Session: September through December — Applications postmarked by September 1.
Winter-Spring Session: January through May — Applications postmarked by December 15.
Summer Session I: May through August — Applications postmarked by April 15.
Summer Session II: June through September — Applications postmarked by May 15.

Please allow us 4 to 6 weeks to process your application. Because of the volume of applications received, we are unable to notify applicants who are not selected for internships.

All materials submitted become part of the confidential property of WHYY and are not returnable. Telephone interviews may be conducted with potential interns as part of the selection process. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

WHYY Internship Offerings

On Stage At Curtis is a weekly series that airs year-round on Sundays and Saturdays at 6pm. The program allows viewers to experience student recitals by the finest young classical musicians on the stage of Field Concert Hall at the Curtis Institute of Music.

We record 30 two-hour live concerts and produce 26- one hour programs a season. The seasons are produced a year in advance. We will begin wrapping up Season 12 and starting Season 13 in September 2017.

The On Stage at Curtis intern will learn:

  • All aspects of television production including pre-production, production, and post production;
  • How to research various artists, classical music composition and develop interview questions;
  • How to summarize the artists performing and the compositions in short concise paragraphs;
  • The organizing and structuring of each program and how to offline edit;
  • Professional etiquette when going on shoots.

We are looking for someone who has interests in classical music but not necessary. Experience with FCP 7 and FCP 10 are especially welcome.

Time commitment: Two days a week with flexible hours. The intern will be encouraged to attend evening shoots but not a requirement.

The Pulse is WHYY’s one-hour, weekly radio show that airs on Fridays at 9am and Sundays at noon. The show is also heard on WXXI, WABE, WITF, WESA, KHNS, Prairie Public and Troy Public Radio.

Excellent writing skills are required. Experience gathering field audio is a plus. Audio recording and producing abilities are a plus as well.

The Pulse intern will:

  • Assist reporters in seeking out health and science related story ideas;
  • Learn to pitch stories and to research story ideas;
  • Help seek out sound-rich health and science related ideas for the show;
  • Assist H&S reporters and producers on weekly production tasks;
  • Learn to research story ideas and to pitch story ideas;
  • Assist in transcribing interviews;
  • Collaborate with producers on recurring segments;
  • Attend press events and learn to write daily news spots;
  • Learn to report audio and web stories for The Pulse.

Time Commitment: 2 full days per week.

We offer two kinds of internships in the radio newsroom. Interns for both roles in the newsroom must be motivated and able to learn new skills quickly.

  1. NewsWorks Tonight: Interns should have demonstrated experience in journalism, radio/multi-media preferred. They should also be assertive and comfortable calling people on the phone to help secure people for show interviews. Interns will:
    • Learn how to record interviews, select sound bites for use in broadcast and use audio editing software (Pro Tools) to cut that sound.
    • Research ideas for interviews for the show and provide background to producers and host for interviews.
    • Sometimes conduct "person on the street" interviews.
    • Learn what it takes to get a daily news show on the air.

  2. Newsroom: Interns should have demonstrated experience in journalism, radio/multi-media preferred. They should also be assertive and comfortable calling people on the phone to help secure people for show interviews. They must be a fast learner on the technical side. Interns will:
    • Learn how to report a simple story, cut sound bites for use on air and write simple web and radio reports.
    • Interns who show promise will be able to voice a story for air, but that is NOT a guarantee.
    • Learn how to produce audio in Pro Tools.
    • Go out on assignment with reporters as an extra set of hands.

During the academic year, interns must be able to put in at least 2 full days or a combination of 20 hours in good sized blocks. In summer, a minimum of 3 full days is required.

The ideal candidate should have strong writing skills, web design skills and some basic understanding of video production and editing processes. Also a working knowledge of social media – particularly Facebook and Twitter.

The NewsWorks Editorial intern will:

  • Learn how to assign, produce, write and edit stories for the web;
  • Learn how to evaluate performance of social media;
  • Have the opportunity to create original content;
  • Learn to pitch ideas for content, and to communicate why a piece will work;
  • Hone news judgment;
  • Work in a deadline-driven environment and learn to operate under pressure;
  • Have an experience that will foster interpersonal skills, quick and creative writing, and exacting copy skills.

Time Commitment: Negotiable

The NewsWorks-TV intern in the WHYY Wilmington studio will:

  • Learn TV studio production through our First recording session on Wednesday mornings. The student can observe the studio and the control. The student will assist through operating the show teleprompter.
  • Have the opportunity to research long and short term projects with the guidance of producers and reporters.
  • Will have the opportunity to observe avid video editing. As a part of the learning process will be able to do some hands on AVID newscutter practice.
  • Go out on assignments both through daily news and First magazine shoots.
  • Can learn about story construction through the logging of video and audio under the supervision of a reporter/producer.
  • Will be able to practice write web news stories.
  • Will be able to make story pitches based on student research. Take those approved pitches and report a multi-media news story that may appear under the student's by-line on the Delaware page of newsworks.org.

Time commitment - 2 days a week with a minimum of 6 hours each. One day should be Wednesday beginning at 9am.

Instructional Assistants will learn from WHYY's Dorrance H. Hamilton Public Media Commons staff as they assist with project coordination and instruction by serving as second instructor in a classroom of 10-15 high school students who are learning video production.

Ideal candidates will have completed coursework in journalism, education, social work, production, or related fields. Candidates must have experience working with video and/or with teens and have excellent organization and communication skills.

Instructional Assistants intern will learn to:

  • Shoot video;
  • Record audio;
  • Edit with Final Cut Pro;
  • Compose shots;
  • Edit documentary-style productions.

Instructional Assistant interns will become familiar with:

  • Basic classroom management;
  • Student-centered exploratory projects;
  • How to assist with student production.

Afternoon and evening availability requested. (CBC and CAC required upon acceptance).

WHYY offers interns a great opportunity to diversify their writing skills, learn to write for different audiences, refine their interviewing skills and build a solid portfolio of publications. Students majoring in communications, public relations, marketing or journalism are preferred.

The ideal candidate must have strong writing, editing and organizational skills and an ability to meet deadlines. A working knowledge of newswriting style is recommended.

The Public Information intern will:

  • Learn to write press releases and news stories for internal and external communications vehicles including newsletters and social media;
  • Assist with organizing press clips, building and updating news media lists and other assignments.

Applicants for the Public Information internship must submit three to five of their strongest writing samples, preferably in the form of press releases or news stories or both rather than the 2-3 page writing sample listed under "How to Apply".

Time commitment: 15 to 20 hours a week, flexibility required.

WHYY’s Promotions team writes and produces on-air and online content to enhance the company’s brand, convert viewers and listeners into supporters, inform people of programs and events, and more. We’re looking for an eager producer-in-training who wants real production experience at a major-market television station. We have production experience to share, and you'll leave with broadcast-quality finished pieces to add to your resume reel.

The ideal candidate will have a basic knowledge of digital editing and television production. Must be able to work as part of a small crew or independently, be dependable and flexible. Experience with After Effects or other graphics/animation software a plus.

The Promotions intern will:

  • Gain hands-on experience producing and editing on-air promotional content;
  • Gain insight into broadcast promotion and branding strategies;
  • Assist with on-location promo shoots, including pre-production, production and post-production;
  • Learn traffic and archive procedures;
  • Understand how on-air promotions fit into WHYY’s strategy.

Time commitment: 10-15 hours per week (flexible)

As part of the application process for Promotions Intern, please submit a link to at least one piece of video you’ve produced.

The Human Resources intern will learn:

  • How to organize and develop schedules and meetings;
  • How laws and regulations play an important role in the daily functions of HR;
  • How to establish metrics and budget analysis;
  • The importance of active communication and interpersonal relationships;
  • How to conduct searches and understand different benefits and compensation plans;
  • To create processes that are aligned with federal and state employment laws to help organizational operations;
  • How to effectively navigate an HRIS system while maintaining paper files;
  • The recruiting process from job posting to observing interviews;
  • The relationship between HR and Finance in terms of payroll, onboarding, terminations, etc.;
  • How to effectively prepare for onboarding new employees;
  • How to multitask material effective by prioritizing

Time commitment: minimum of one full day a week (flexible)

Friday Arts is an Emmy and James Beard award-winning TV program highlighting arts and culture stories in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. The Friday Arts internship is the only opportunity at WHYY to write and edit original web videos that will ultimately live on the national PBS video server, alongside local (first, On Tour) and national (NOVA, Downton Abbey) content and hundreds of pieces of Friday Arts online video content.

Those with experience using FCP 7 are especially welcome (our workflow dictates that we will not move to FCPX for some time, if ever). After Effects experience is a plus.

Friday Arts interns will:

  • Write and edit an original web video based upon an intern or producer-driven idea or story not used in the broadcast segment.
  • Write 2-3 sentence paragraphs that describe the subject of the web video to be published alongside the original web video.
  • Assist in logging and transcribing footage.
  • Act as production assistants on location, generating, organizing and gathering release forms, among other things.
  • Support the producers as they research, shoot and edit segments for the monthly broadcast and the expanding website.

Friday Arts interns will learn:

  • How to ingest HD XDCAM footage from XDCAM disks to a standard computer hard drive;
  • How to convert MP4 files (and other assorted media) and then output these files to an XDCAM disk for use in the online edit suite;
  • How to batch transcode Canon HDSLR, Panasonic AVCHD files and GoPro Hero 3 MP4's to XDCAM files for use in FCP projects;
  • How to organize FCP 7 project files for optimal editing efficiency between other interns, different machines and other producers;
  • How to output HD files from Google Earth for use in various segments;
  • How to use iPhoto to output motion graphics for use in their web videos;
  • How to encode edited web pieces at different resolutions for optimal playback quality on the PBS video website;
  • How to export HD footage to an SD resolution, and with that SD footage, author a DVD from scratch using DVD Studio Pro;
  • How to access and choose music from a music production library to ultimately use in their own original web videos;
  • How to loop any music to fit any video.

Time commitment: two days a week. Schedules are flexible in terms of daily arrival and departure times.

On Tour is an Emmy Award-winning music and performance program recorded live on location at local venues in and around Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey. The hallmark of On Tour is the seamless weaving of intimate artist interviews with great performances.

The ideal candidate must be able to work independently, be dependable and flexible, with a basic knowledge of television production. Good communication and organizational skills are a must. Interns are encouraged to attend shoots, but it is not a requirement

The On Tour intern will:

  • Learn elements of producing On Tour including pre-production, production and post-production
  • Have the opportunity to work with social media for promotion of the program;
  • Have the opportunity to research various featured artists and develop interview questions;
  • Learn how to put together a television script by evaluating interview and performance elements;
  • Have the opportunity to attend On Tour shoots at live concerts, and attend artist interviews;
  • Learn first-hand how to work with production managers at the various venues during a production.

Time commitment: 2 days per week, 10am- 4pm

PlanPhilly is an online news project of WHYY about Philadelphia urbanism. It focuses on design, development, planning, and transportation stories in the city. Excellent writing skills are required. Experience with various social media platforms and online content management systems are a plus. Interest in Philadelphia urbanism a must.

  • Maintain and manage PlanPhilly's robust events calendar
  • Assist with production of our weekly e-newsletters
  • Learn to research and pitch story ideas, and write posts
  • Collaborate with PlanPhilly staff on research and special projects
  • Learn how to work in a deadline-driven environment
  • Help PlanPhilly bolster its community relationships through outreach

The ideal candidate must have good speaking voice and feel comfortable talking on the phone. Good organizational skills are a must. Interest in radio production is preferred.

The You Bet Your Garden intern will:

  • Learn radio production from start to finish including preparation, in-studio production, and putting the show together for final broadcast;
  • Have the opportunity to learn audio editing using Pro-Tools;
  • Learn to pitch show ideas;
  • Learn how to work in a deadline driven environment and to operate under pressure;
  • Have the opportunity to learn from a seasoned on-air host;
  • Have an experience that will foster interpersonal skills.

Time commitment ~~ looking for 1.5 - 2 days per week: Wednesdays are production days.
